Manage your digital legacy in 5 steps

1 min. reading time 24 October 2024

A large part of your life takes place online today. You have social media accounts, online bank accounts, photos in the cloud and digital subscriptions. That makes it wise to arrange your digital legacy properly as well. In five steps, we explain how you can approach this, so your loved ones are not faced with surprises later.

1. Take inventory of your digital assets

The first step is to map out what your digital assets are. Think of social media accounts (such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, WhatsApp), online bank accounts, cryptocurrency wallets, digital photo albums, subscriptions and email accounts. Make a list and decide which ones you want to keep and which ones you want removed.

With myGoodbye, you can link a trusted contact in the app. This person gains access to your recorded wishes and instructions. That way, they can manage your digital legacy. Think of deactivating accounts, preserving important documents or following the instructions you have recorded.

3. Record your wishes in myGoodbye

The app offers a clear place to record all your wishes regarding your digital legacy. Whether you want your social media profiles deactivated, certain photo albums preserved, or important digital documents to be accessible for your loved ones -- myGoodbye helps you organise this.

4. Update your information regularly

The internet changes constantly and your online assets change with it. It is therefore helpful to update your digital legacy and wishes at least once a year. You can add new accounts, remove old ones and update passwords.

5. Share your wishes with your loved ones

Make sure you record in myGoodbye who has access to your digital accounts and what should happen with them. You can do this by linking trusted contacts. You can read how this works here: https://www.mygoodbye.com/wist-je-dat/wist-je-dat-jouw-gegevens-alleen-naar-gekoppelde-vertrouwenspersonen-gestuurd-kan-worden

If you arrange this well now, it gives you and your loved ones peace of mind.
